What Are Your Dream Destinations?

Actually, I was the seventh private explorer but the first Canadian ‘space clown.’ I never dreamed of going into space; I just dreamed of traveling. But I admit that space is an incredible destination and the absolute traveling experience.

What are your dream destinations? Are there places you have always wanted to go, and would go to tomorrow if all the stars and budgets were aligned? Are there places you have

recently discovered as intriguing which you never gave more than a moment’s thought before? Are there places you plan to return to as often as you can because you just cannot get enough? I have some nominees in each category, and I expect you do, too. So what places are we talking about here?

Virtuoso has surveyed readers and travelers for nine years about their dream destinations. You can read their findings here in great detail. I will list the ten most mentioned places below very briefly. There are a few destinations which I am surprised or disappointed are not on the list. But with only ten slots and looking for everyone’s favorites, hard choices have to be made, I guess.

My nominees for the next five slots (I know you are wondering) would be Peru, Ecuador (including the Galapagos), Southeast Asia, Patagonia of Chile/Argentina, and — wait for it – India. I have good reason to believe that these are all experiencing growth in interest, attractiveness, and ability to deliver a trip of a lifetime. Some of them might leave you cool – as a few of the top ten leave me thinking “meh.” Many destinations offer the trip of a lifetime – but not everyone dreams the same.

But enough of the tease. Here are the top ten dream destinations in Virtuoso’s poll.

Australia – especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Italy – a perennial favorite. History, food, wine, what calls to you?

New Zealand – a wide range of geography for loads of adventure sports, Maori culture.

France – see Italy above. And remember, there’s more to France than Paris.

Greece – despite ongoing financial headlines, the culture remains and welcomes you.

Ireland – amazing scenery and authentic hospitality in a language you can understand (mostly).

Caribbean – pick your island for the “flavor” you seek.

Fiji – more exotic and even more relaxing than Hawaii and Tahiti.

England – Masterpiece Theater, Benedict Cumberbatch, Shakespeare, or Sir Elton John? It’s all here.

Antarctica – One end of the earth, an explorer’s dream. Book more than a year in advance for the best experience.

Those are the consensus destinations. But you are not everyone. What is your dream destination? And when do you plan to go? Or go again? Call me!
